On June 24, 2010, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Edwardo Loredo was killed in Jelewar, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. It was the day before his 35th birthday.
“Less than a year (after he died), I was getting ready to turn 35, and I found myself struggling with the fact that I was going to make it to this birthday and he didn’t,” Loredo’s wife Jennifer says. “I just remember thinking, ‘I have to celebrate this birthday.‘”
Jennifer approached the owner of the affiliate she attended and told her she wanted to do something to honor Eddie. Loredo—6 rounds of 24 air squats, 24 push-ups, 24 walking lunges and a 400-m run—became an official CrossFit Hero workout on Dec. 31, 2012.
Jennifer says the CrossFit community embraced her family.
“There are people all over the world on any given day doing this workout in honor of Eddie,” she says. “He loved fitness. The exercises that make up the workout are ones that he loved.”
She adds: “I don’t think (June 24) will ever be an easy day, but it’s honoring Eddie and his memory. And I also like to use it as an opportunity just to remind people that life is precious and today we have men and women that are still fighting for our freedoms.”
